AIKIDO LEADERSHIP WORKSHOP

AIKIDO LEADERSHIP WORKSHOP

AIKIDO LEADERSHIP
WORKSHOP IN A NUTSHELL
In life, there are only two resources that are always within our reach: Our minds, and our bodies.
Through this Aikido Leadership Workshop, we will help you identify and develop the embodied capacities you need to improve your leadership, whether by improved self-knowledge, by managing stress, by better understanding other people or by influencing with power and care.
This is an experiential and highly interactive workshop, where you will be led though gentle series of exercises by psychologist and 4th dan Aikido teacher Sebastien Martineau.
Throughout the focus will be on turning your insights into practical tools you can apply in your daily life, at home and at work.
The workshop is open to all, no fitness level is required, and all exercises are gentle and deeply respectful of the bodies involved.
AIKIDO LEADERSHIP BENEFITS FOR YOU
We work with the body first: Most training happens from the neck up. Yet, the qualities that help us be our best are embodied, be it presence, awareness, interpersonal competence, or charisma, they cannot be accessed purely intellectually, or expressed if we treat the body solely as a brain-taxi.
We will explore how we construct and express patterns of emotion, perception, cognition, action, culture and relating through their corresponding postures, ways of moving, patterns of attention, breath, and sound, learning to use the patterns consciously and constructively, rather than habitually and often destructively.
We will apply this to stress and fight, flight, freeze responses. We will explore how to follow, and how to lead, through gentle pair and group movement exercises, and uncover their implications for your workplace leadership.
In simple terms, you will increase your awareness and range of possible responses, to have more choice in your life, using the body to support your choices.
This is embodied training.
KEY SKILLS AND COMPETENCES WE DEVELOP
1. Connecting and understanding (2 hours):
We will use gentle exercises to settle down, connect with each other, explore together the broad themes and key knowledge of the work, and establish the questions you want to work with as an individual.
Objectives:
  • Establish expectations and take ownership of your learning journey.
  • Agree practice rules (Embodiment, stress, trauma and body and partner
    respect).
  • Connect to each other.
  • Identify growth potential through an embodied mindset challenge.
  • Settle – apple the simplest stress management technique.

2. Self-Awareness (2 hours):
We will focus on ourselves, first exploring an embodied personality model (4 elements) to better understand our strengths and habitual patterns, and how we can leverage them for creativity. Then we will explore how emotion and stress, relaxation and grace are constructed and expressed in the body. Without self-awareness none of the other capabilities are accessible, and this will be more than enough to get us started.
Objectives:
  • Identify and understand emotional and behavioral patterns.
  • Identify development areas.
  • Use embodiment for creative choice.

3. Self-Regulation (2 hours):
We will use a group of techniques from Aikido, called centering, and practice multiple ways of dealing with stress, anxiety, and fight-flight-freeze to be less reactive and more open, connective, and effective in our daily (working) lives.
Objectives:
  • Consciously construct positive emotional and behavioral patterns.
  • Reduce stress.
  • Increase presence, balance, and mobility.

Other Awareness (2 hours):
We will use the 4 elements embodied personality model and how the archetypes interact with each other, as well as body language and signal of threat response, to better understand and communicate with others.
Objectives:
  • Develop other awareness and habitual communication patterns.
  • Identify stress signals.
  • Communicate to connect.

Influence and leadership (4 hours):
We will bring all the previous sections together, and focus on leading and following, influencing through self-regulation and expression. We will explore the two core embodied dimensions of leadership, power and care, and how they are expressed and can be developed. You will create a practice and further development plan to embed and carry forward the learning into your daily life.
Objectives:
  • Understand leading and following.
  • Develop your capacities for power and care.
  • Create your practice and development plan.
